The Gospel According to Matthew
The Gospel of Matthew is the first book of the New Testament. Matthew begins his account of the ministry of Jesus with a genealogy from Abraham, father of Israel, down to Joseph, the husband of Mary, from whom Jesus was born to show that Jesus was indeed Israel’s long-awaited Messiah. Matthew portrays the struggles and conflicts between the evangelist’s community and the other Jews and are framed around Jesus’ preaching regarding the coming of the kingdom of heaven and repentance.
